Casio G-Shock GLX5600A-3 G-Lide

When it comes to G Shocks my favorite style are the squares (also known as 5600’s).  I like squares because I grew up using a Timex Expedition Atlantis watch; which is your basic affordable every day digital watch.  That watch was slim and light like a Swatch, but built extraordinarily well (I still own one that is over 20 years old).  After years of wearing them I became used to only using slim watches, which is why I like 5600’s.
This square model is called a GLX5600A-3.  This watch is also a G-Lide, meaning it measures the waves and the lunar calendar.  It’s a particularly rare watch because it comes in a dark green colorway with yellow highlights.  I’m happy I bought this watch when I had the chance because I haven’t seen this color model sold ever again. Unfortunately that’s how it is when it comes to collecting G-Shocks.

Casio G-Shock DW-6900-1VCT

I bought this watch at Wal-Mart last year when it went on sale.  I had been eyeing it for a while because of how nice it looked.  I just couldn’t believe that such a nice looking watch would be sold in Wal-Mart of all places.  In my opinion this budget friendly no frills watch looks better than most limited and expensive watches that are released.
The only visible features that make this watch different from other G Shock’s is the plastic buckle and the “shock resistant” etched on the steel back (it normally says “shock resist”).  And I guess you can include the packaging as well because this Wal-Mart version comes in a standard Casio box.  Other than that, this watch is perfect and good to go, especially for the price ($59.96 Canadian retail).

Casio G-Shock DW-6900CS-1CU

Here’s a watch I’m sure would have been highly sought after if it would have been nicknamed the Xbox G-Shock.  I say this because the colorway reminds me of the colors used on the original Xbox released in 2001.  That console, just like this watch comes in a black colorway with green and white highlights.  Officially this watch is a Casio G-Shock model DW-6900CS-1CU.
While the colorway and the model type is nice, my one complaint about this watch is that it’s a negative display.  I hate negative displays because in direct sunlight they’re difficult to read.  Of course all of this goes away in the dark when you shine that lume and it gives you a clear reading.  However this isn’t enough for me to recommend this model and I hope that the popularity of negative display watches goes away because I’m left with having to pass on nice colorway watches simply because they’re negative displays.

Casio G-Shock DW-6900NB-4DR

Once you become a G-Shock collector you tend to want variety in your collection.  My collection isn’t very large, but I do like to buy watches in colours I don’t already own.  This is why I bought my DW-6900NB-4DR, or as I like to call it, my purple watch.  This 6900 model has a 3230 module, and is part of the 2011 mirror-metallic G-Shock series.
I’m not much of a purple fan, but there’s something about this particular colour that I like.  It has this metallic paint look to it that sparkles when the light hits it.  The band also features subtle screen printing that gives it a nice accent.  Besides recognizing the quality of G-Shocks, I was also amazed to find out that I wasn’t able to remove or rub off the print on the band after heavy use, or with nail toner.
Other features worth mentioning about this model is that the face is a mix of metallic mirror and a green negative display.  While negative displays are popular among collectors, I’m not much of a fan of it because it makes it hard to read the time from certain angles (especially when the back is reflective).  The eyes, or the seconds counter also feature this mirrored look, but with an orange display.  Overall the watch is more of a fashion statement, than something I would rely on everyday but I still love it.

Casio G-Shock DW-D5600P-8JF, DWD5600P-8

I’m not much of a recent release G-Shock collector but when I did a search of current G-Shock models for sale I came upon this beauty; model DW-D5600P-8JF released in May 2014.  I was instantly attracted to this watch because of the colors used.  The grey reminded me of a similar grey used on a Nintendo Game Boy.  Now believe it or not, but just a few months ago I was watching an actual Game Boy watch on eBay.  That watch looked exactly like a miniature Game Boy, but with a grey band and a face that read the time. Unfortunately I had to pass bidding on that watch because the seller was unsure if the 20 year old watch still worked.
Although I was a little disappointed for passing up on such a nice Nintendo collectable, I felt I had made the right decision because eventually that watch would have broken into piece after a day with me (I’m not careful with how I treat my watches).  This is why I love G-Shocks, because they can take a beating and still look pristine and fashionable.  So when I saw this 5600 for sale, I felt like destiny had made this watch for me.  It has the best of both G-Shock (quality watch) and Nintendo (Game Boy colors).  Granted the watch also has a Miami Vice flavour with its turquoise, blue and hot pink highlights.
Another interesting feature about this watch is the return of the metal face protector (bull bars).  This feature is a throwback to the DW5600ED model released in 1996.  I don’t have any watch with a metal face protector and was always jealous that select Baby G’s carried this feature, so when I saw it on this model I was very excited.  My only complaint about this watch is that the band does feel a little snug (on my usual hole), but that’s an easy fix by just wearing it a little looser.  Other than that this is a great watch that I’m glad to add to my collection.  Please note the version I have is model DW-D5600P-8JF (Japan release).

G-Shock G-6900KG-3CR Solar Military

I’ve been collecting G-Shocks for a while now, but this is my first time featuring them on my blog.  I never mentioned them before because I never assumed that people collected them.  That was until one day when I wanted to buy a watch and went online to look for information about it.  It was then that I realized that there was a whole community dedicated to not only G-Shocks, but all kinds of watches.  This made me happy because it made me feel like I wasn’t the only one who loved watches.
The watch I am featuring for this post is a G-6900KG-3CR.  It comes in a military green or olive colorway, with orange and black highlights.  The watch is also a tough solar, meaning that it comes with a solar panel that can be charged by the sun.  This is wonderful because you won’t have to change the battery as often compared to a regular 6900 watch.  The inclusion of tough solar is one of the reasons I bought this watch.
Another feature of this watch is that it comes with a negative display.  Although I had read reviews that negative displays were hard to read, I still bought this watch thinking that it probably wouldn’t be a huge issue.  However, I was wrong because the face is difficult to read from different angles.  The addition of the mirrored face (from the solar panel) also adds to this headache.  Despite this watch coming in a wonderful color, and featuring tough solar, this is one watch I would tell people to view in person before they purchase.
