Today
MLB gave the green light to protective caps for pitchers. The protective cap would be worn under a cap,
giving the pitcher a head shield that is revolutionary in baseball. Unfortunately this new shield comes at a cost
of an awkward appearance, and also the discomfort in overheating after extended
periods. A few years ago I would have
been opposed to this protective cap, but after watching J.A. Happ get hit on
the head, I am now in favor of this product approval. My support for this protective cap comes on
the belief that any equipment that can secure the safety of an individual on
the field, without interfering with their performance is worth investing
in. Just like the goalie mask in hockey,
this protective shield will eventually gain acceptance as it becomes better
designed, lighter in weight, and saves a few players a visit to the hospital.
