Star Wars: The Force Awakens

(Spoiler Alert)  I just came back from watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and…

I thought it sucked.  I hate to focus on the negative but, I feel like I just can’t help it.  Once I start reflecting on the parts I hated, the list just keeps growing.  So here’s my list of the things I hated:

Kylo Ren was too weak, and got beat up by everyone… everyone

Rey never actually advanced in her knowledge (developed her Jedi powers slowly), she just knew everything; how to fly, how to be a mechanic, how to mind control, how to use a lightsaber.. as opposed to other Jedi’s who took a life time to become a jedi.  There was no training, no master (teacher) for her… she just knew everything

After the Battle of Endor (Return of the Jedi), it seems like the Alliance never had any peace, and it’s almost as if they kept at war against the Dark Side.  All that fighting was for nothing, the Empire just got stronger and built a bigger death star.

C-3PO has a red arm for no reason.  It will probably be explained later.. but there was also no hint that it would be either.

The “Rule of Two” that is a master and an apprentice Sith was never explained or used.  I mean it was important in episode 1-3, with the master being Darth Sidious, and the apprentice being Darth Maul, followed by Darth Tyranus, and finally Darth Vader.  That I understood, only after doing a little reading online.  So I assumed that after Darth Sidious (Emperor Palpatine) had died, and Vader as well, that would be the end of the Dark Side… so I would have at least liked a little explanation of the new bad guys in the Force Awakens, like is Supreme Leader Snoke supposed to have taken the place and powers of Darth Sidious, making him a master, and Kylo Ren the apprentice.

I didn’t like how easily Captain Phasma took down the defence shield when held at gun point.

I know I waited a long time to see this film, and I know the reviews have all been positive, but I felt like I needed to write about what I didn’t like.  And while I could continue to nitpick at this film, this is about where I want to stop, because despite all the bad, I still think it was a good film.  The acting was fantastic, and I really enjoyed everyone’s personality… no Jar Jar Binks to spoil this film.  The visuals were nice, with many beautiful and distinct areas featured; the fight in the snow woods was one of my favourites.  Though I did hate the Snoke CGI scenes.  The music was great, though I can’t really remember anything new sticking out.  Honestly, I’m just grateful that Star Wars is back, and that two more episodes are on the way.  Who knows how this movie will been seen once the others are released.

  1. Great review! I enjoyed the film but thought it was way too similar to a new hope.
